Battle of the Books
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS IS BACK!
Battle of the Books is a fun, friendly reading competition open to all 4th grade students. All participants are required to read four of the six designated titles. A competition will be held after school on Wednesday, March 21st, where teams will compete by answering questions based on the books. The battle is in the format of a game show. The first and second place teams will be featured on our Wake Up Wildcats News Show, will appear in the Wilson Creek school newsletter, and will win cool trophies.
These are the titles for the fourth grade Battle of the Books:
* Akiko on the Planet Smoo by Mark Crilley
* Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
* Granny Torrelli Makes Soup by Sharon Creech
* Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
* Lost Treasure of the Emerald Eye by Geronimo Stilton
* The Report Card by Andrew Clements
All titles are available for a two-week loan period from the Media Center and may be renewed one time. Students may check out one Battle of the Books title at a time. If your child would like to participate, please complete and sign the permission form by Friday, October 14th.
How the Game Works
Participants will compete in homeroom groups. Each team will designate a “spokesperson” who is the only one who may answer a question. No points will be given to the team if anyone else responds. Teams may huddle to discuss their answer once the entire question has been read. Should they interrupt the question or speak out of turn, 2 points will be deducted. The questions will be read ONCE in the following format, “in which book did --------?” A correct response must include both the title and the author.
Prior to each round, the Questioner will read aloud the titles and authors so the participants can hear the correct pronunciation. A team has 30 seconds to respond and 5 points are awarded for correct responses. A missed question is then read for the second team, which has 15 seconds to respond. If correct, they earn 3 points. A round will have 20 questions, 10 per team. In the event of a tie, there will be a tiebreaker question. There will be many rounds, and then a final battle until only one team remains undefeated!
